Prayer was never meant to be seasonal.

In this episode of The Daily Rebel, we walk through James 5:13–15 and confront the reality that many people don’t actually have a prayer life—they have a crisis response. When life falls apart, they pray. When pressure hits, they panic and finally seek God. But when life is steady, comfortable, or successful, prayer slowly disappears. James destroys that mindset by showing us that prayer is not reserved for emergencies—it’s meant for every season of life.

James gives three different situations: suffering, cheerfulness, and weakness.

That’s intentional. He’s covering pain, pleasure, and pressure—every major rhythm of human life. The message is clear: prayer is not situational, it’s foundational. If suffering drives you away from God instead of deeper into dependence on Him, you’ll miss the very strength God wants to provide. If blessing causes you to enjoy life while forgetting the God who gave it, your heart slowly drifts into self-sufficiency. And if weakness causes you to isolate instead of bringing your burdens into the light, independence will crush you spiritually.

In this episode we break down three core truths:

  1. Pray when it hurts — Pain is not meant to push you away from God, but deeper into Him.
  2. Praise when it’s good — If you only talk to God when you need Him, you don’t have relationship—you have transaction.
  3. Pray when you’re weak — Weakness isn’t the problem; independence is. God designed you to need Him and the people around you.

Jesus prayed in every season: pressure, peace, pain, and suffering. And because of Him, you don’t have to carry life alone. Whatever season you’re in—pray in it. Because redeemed rebels don’t pray occasionally; they pray consistently.

This podcast is for the ones who know they will rescue, but also know they were resent, saved by grace, sent to live differently. We're not rebelling against God, we're rebelling against everything that keeps us free. Every day, we don't swing our opinions, we sharpen our lives on the word of God, the sword of the Spirit, guiding us, cutting through lives, and leading us one step at a time. We'll talk faith, identity, purpose, leadership, and what it really looks like to follow Jesus in a distracted world. Welcome to the Daily Rebel. Yo, what's good? Daily Rebels. Here we go. We are on the final week of the book of James, episodes 61 through 65,

Final Week of James

SPEAKER_00

Monday through Friday. So we're closing out, James. I'm a little sad about it, but I'm also excited to move on to the next thing. But so here we go. Uh episode 61, James

Today's Text: James 5:13-15

SPEAKER_00

chapter 5, verse 13 to 15. If you have a Bible, turn there. Let's get it because this entire week uh we're talking about prayer. So prayer. And today's episode is pray in every season. So James chapter 5, 13 through 15. Here we go. It says this if anyone among you is suffering, he should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises. Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him. So let's be honest. Uh how many of

Do You Only Pray When Things Go Wrong?

SPEAKER_00

you only pray when something's wrong? Like when life hits, you pray. When things fall apart, you pray. When you when you need something, you pray. When life is good, when things are steady, when nothing feels urgent, it's funny how prayer fades, doesn't it? Because we've already got everything we need, especially here in America, man. We're comfortable, we got everything rocking our way. See, most people don't have a prayer life, they have a prayer pattern. And the pattern goes like this if something's bad, pray. If something's good, we forget. And if something's weak, we just panic. But James steps in and he says, Hey, y'all, that's not how prayer works. And really, he gives a few scenarios. Hey, if somebody is suffering, he's saying you need to pray. If you're cheerful, you need to praise. And if you're sick, call on people to pray for you. I remember in the fall of 2024, I got really sick. I had to go to the emergency room. I lost about 25 pounds. We have no idea what in the world happened. Nothing, uh, not one thing came back showing anything I had. But here's what I do know is that my lead pastor, the pastors on our staff, the people of our church were praying fervently for me because they knew I was in a bad, bad shape. And that's that's not random. It's intentional. And he's he's covering pain, pleasure, and weakness. And then one of the reasons James is saying this is because again, he's writing to the persecuted and scattered people among the churches of Rome and among the churches in this uh tyrant era of people persecuting people who follow Jesus. So he's covering one again, he's covering

James Covers Every Season

SPEAKER_00

pain, pleasure, weakness. In other words, he's covering your whole life. So prayer isn't for certain moments, it is for every moment. Prayer is not

Prayer Is Foundational, Not Situational

SPEAKER_00

situational. Hear this prayer is not situational, it is foundational. So let me give y'all three points. Number one,

Point 1: Pray When It Hurts

SPEAKER_00

you need to pray when it hurts. Is anyone suffering? This is what the text says. If anyone is suffering, let him pray. Most people, a lot of people do the opposite. When life gets hard, they just withdraw. They're like, I'm just going through something. So I'm just not gonna, I'm not gonna talk to the one who who smited me or they isolate. And there's nothing more dangerous than an isolated person. This has happened to me. I remember in 2013. I was going through some struggles. I had just entered into seminary in a season of ministry, and I felt like I felt like I didn't want to talk to nobody. I let my introversion actually isolate me away from people because I was just going through something. But withdrawing and isolation does absolutely nothing. And we shut down. And so if you run from God in suffering, you miss the only place you'll find strength. You see, pain is not meant to push you away from God, it's meant to push you into him. So let me ask you this what

What Do You Run To First?

SPEAKER_00

do you do first when life hits you? Let me tell you, pray when it hurts.

Point 2: Praise When It’s Good

SPEAKER_00

Number two, praise when it's good. The text says, Is anyone cheerful? Let them sing praise. When life is good, people enjoy it. But sometimes we forget God in it, don't we? If you only talk to God when you need him, you don't have

You Don't Have A Relationship You Have A Transaction

SPEAKER_00

a relationship, you have a transaction.

unknown

Whoops.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. I just knocked somebody in the mouth. Praise keeps your heart aligned even when stuff's going good. And when things go right, I got a question for you. Do you acknowledge God

Do You Forget God in Good Seasons?

SPEAKER_00

or do you just kind of move on? And number three, what I'll tell you is this is pray when

Point 3: Pray When You’re Weak

SPEAKER_00

you're weak. So not only do we need to pray when we're hurt, when it hurts, not only do we need to pray when it's good, and praise when we're when it's good, we need to pray when we're weak. The text says this is anyone sick, let him call. So, in other words, pray when you're weak. He doesn't say handle it, he says call. Go after people at a church to pray for you. Weakness is not something to hide, it's something to bring into the light. Weakness isn't the problem,

Weakness vs Independence

SPEAKER_00

independence is. And God has designed you to need him, to need others, and to not carry everything alone. Where are you trying to be strong instead of being honest? Because here's the deal if if you only pray when it's bad,

Tension: Emergency Prayer vs Real Prayer Life

SPEAKER_00

you don't have a prayer life, you have an emergency line. God isn't seasonal, y'all, so your prayer life shouldn't be either. And weakness isn't the problem. Independence is. So, really, I want to tell you this

Gospel Shift: Jesus Prayed in Every Season

SPEAKER_00

Jesus prayed in every season. He prayed in pressure, he prayed in peace, and he prayed in pain. And even in his weakest moment, he didn't isolate, he surrendered. He even asked James, Peter, and John, hey, pray with me so that you may not enter into temptation, for the flesh is weak. And because of him, you don't have to carry life alone. When do you actually pray? Only when it's bad, only when you need something? Or is prayer a part

Pray in Every Season

SPEAKER_00

of every season of your life? So, whatever season you're in, pray in it. When it hurts, pray when it's good, pray, praise. When you when you're weak, you need to call upon the church and call upon the Lord. Because listen, redeemed rebels, we don't pray occasionally, we pray consistently. Amen. Thank you
