#68 | The Cross Cancelled Your Record | Romans 8:2-3 | The Great 8
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if the greatest problem in your life has already been dealt with? In this episode of The Daily Rebel, we continue through Romans 8 and discover why condemnation no longer has authority over those who are in Christ. Romans 8:2–3 reveals that God didn't simply overlook sin, excuse sin, or ignore sin—He dealt with it completely through Jesus Christ. The gospel is not behavior modification. It's not becoming a slightly better version of yourself. It's complete liberation from the authority of sin and death through the finished work of Christ.
Paul explains that the law could expose sin, but it could never remove it. Rules can reveal bondage, but they can't break it. The law showed humanity that we were guilty, broken, and incapable of saving ourselves. But then Romans 8 gives us two of the most powerful words in Scripture: "God did." What religion couldn't accomplish, what effort couldn't achieve, and what morality couldn't fix, God accomplished through His Son.
In this episode we unpack three life-changing truths:
1. Sin Had a Penalty — God's love does not cancel His holiness. Sin is serious because it is rebellion against a holy God, and grace is powerful because sin was serious.
2. Jesus Became the Sacrifice — The cross wasn't symbolic. It was substitutional. Jesus didn't merely come to inspire you—He came to stand in your place and absorb the punishment you deserved.
3. Your Record Was Nailed to the Cross — The enemy keeps replaying files God deleted. Your debt was erased, your chains were broken, and your sentence was canceled through Christ.
At the cross, Jesus took your guilt, shame, punishment, and condemnation and exchanged them for righteousness, freedom, sonship, and life. That's not self-improvement. That's salvation. If you've been living under the weight of your past, replaying old failures, or identifying yourself by old records, this episode is a reminder that the cross didn't just cover your sin—it killed your record. Because redeemed rebels don't live imprisoned by their past. They walk in the freedom Jesus purchased.

Welcome \\ Daily Rebel Mission
SPEAKER_00This podcast is for the ones who know they will rescue, but also know they will resent. Saved by grace, sent to live differently. We're not rebelling against God, we're rebelling against everything that keeps us free. Every day, we don't swing our opinions, we sharpen our lives on the word of God, the sword of the Spirit guiding us, cutting through lives, and leading us one step at a time. We'll talk faith, identity, purpose, leadership, and what it really looks like to follow Jesus in a distracted world. Welcome to the Daily Rebel. Yo, what up, Daily Rebels? Here we go. We're on day three,
Romans 8:2-3
SPEAKER_00Romans eight. Here we go. We're gonna continue. So therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. And let's continue in the text. Because the law of the spirit of life, so because there is no condemnation, there's no condemnation, because the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free, underline highlight, set you free from law of sin and death. What the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. There's the gospel in two words. He condemns sin in the flesh by sending his son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering. So yesterday we talked about the difference between conviction and condemnation. And today we're talking
Why Condemnation Lost Its Authority
SPEAKER_00about why condemnation no longer has authority over you. Remember, this is the gospel in the greatest chapter in the Bible because God didn't just overlook your sin. Understand that. So imagine waking up one day, finding out your criminal record was completely erased, if you have one. Every charge is removed, every debt cleared, every sentence canceled, no probation, no pending punishment, no file left hanging over your head. That's the kind of freedom
The Freedom of a Cleared Record
SPEAKER_00Romans 8 is talking about. A lot of people think Christianity is about becoming a slightly better version of yourself, more disciplined, more moral, more cleaned up, sophisticated that likes to wear suits. But the gospel
Christianity Is More Than Behavior Modification
SPEAKER_00is way deeper than behavior modifications. I want you to hear that again. The gospel, the good news of Jesus, is way deeper than behavior modification. Because your biggest problem wasn't bad habits, it was sin. You were dead, and sin demanded payment. Paul says, the law of spirit, of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free. That phrase set you free means you're released and liberated and permanently freed from authority. You see, sin used to own you, death used to rule you, but Jesus broke that authority. Paul
What the Law Could Not Do
SPEAKER_00says, What the law could not do, in other words, the law could expose sin, but it could not remove it. Like it guided us. It was a uh I know Joby Martin likes to say it's a map and a mirror. It's a mirror because it reveals how sinful we are. It's a map because it does guide us, but it could, but here's the deal it could not remove it. It could diagnose the problem, but it could not heal it. Rules can reveal bondage, but they can't break it. The law showed humanity. You're guilty, you're broken, you can't save yourself. And then Paul says something powerful. God did. Humanity couldn't fix sin, religion couldn't fix sin. Effort couldn't fix sin. No matter how many times a church times you go to church every year, it couldn't fix sin. God stepped in himself. You see, Jesus didn't ignore your sin,
Jesus Paid for Sin Completely
SPEAKER_00he paid for it completely. So let me give y'all three points. Number
Point 1: Sin Had a Penalty
SPEAKER_00one, sin had a penalty. God's holiness demanded justice.
Why God's Holiness Demands Justice
SPEAKER_00God is loving, but he is also holy. And because he is holy, sin matters. Uh I read a book by Matt Chandler uh recently called Becoming Like Jesus, and he talks about the fact that the verses, the the the context of God is love only is really talked about in a few verses. The word when it talks about God's holiness, I think it's in the Bible over 400 times, based on Matt Chandler's study. And because he is holy, sin matters. And because he is holy, he loves based on his holiness. But listen, sin is not a mistake, it's not a personality flaw, it's not spiritual weakness, it's not even what you choose it to be. Sin is rebellion against God, and rebellion carries judgment. Grace
Grace Is Powerful Because Sin Was Serious
SPEAKER_00is powerful because sin was serious. Paul says the law of sin and death, because sin always leads somewhere, it leads to guilt, to bondage, to separation, to condemnation, and ultimately it leads to death. And
People Want Forgiveness without Understanding What Forgiveness Cost
SPEAKER_00a lot of people want forgiveness without understanding what forgiveness cost because justice mattered.
Point 2: Jesus Became the Sacrifice
SPEAKER_00Number two is Jesus became the sacrifice. The cross
The Cross Was Substitution, Not Symbolism
SPEAKER_00was substitution, not symbolism. Saul, I mean, Paul says God sent Jesus as a sin offering. That language points back to the Old Testament sacrificial system, a sacrifice that stood in the place of the guilty. Jesus didn't uh come merely to inspire you, y'all. He's not a motivational speaker, he came to replace you. The cross was wasn't symbolic. Again, it was substitutional. Jesus absorbed wrath, judgment, punishment, and condemnation, not for his sin, but for yours. Jesus
Jesus Took Your Place So You Wouldn't Have to Take His Punishment
SPEAKER_00took your place so you wouldn't have to take his punishment. Hold up. That's what you need to write down right now, man. Jesus took your place so you wouldn't have to take his punishment. At the cross, God did not ignore justice. He satisfied it. You don't have to keep punishing yourself for a payment Jesus already made. Which leads me to number
Point 3: Your Record Was Nailed to the Cross
SPEAKER_00three. Your record was nailed to the cross. The enemy keeps replaying files God deleted.
The Enemy Keeps Replaying Deleted Files
SPEAKER_00The enemy loves replaying your past, your failures, your shame, and your worst moments. He wants to put it on a video for all to see. But the cross changed your record. Your debt erased, your chains were broken, your prison door swung open, your chains, uh, your your charges were nailed to the cross. The enemy keeps replaying files God already deleted, y'all. Come on, I'm preaching to somebody. A
Why Believers Still Live Like Prisoners
SPEAKER_00lot of believers are free, but still living like prisoners. Still chained to guilt, still chained to shame and chained to old identities. Jesus didn't die to make you better, he died to make you new. The gospel is not making good bad people good, the gospel is making dead people alive. So, what old record are you still letting define you? Because Jesus already nailed it to the cross. At the cross, Jesus took your guilt,
The Great Exchange
SPEAKER_00your shame, your punishment, and your condemnation, and in exchange, he gave you righteousness, his freedom, sonship, and life. That's not self-improvement,
Not Self-Improvement, It's Salvation
SPEAKER_00that's salvation. What change are you still carrying? What guilt are you still replaying? What old version of yourself are you still identifying with? Because the
What Record Are You Replaying?
SPEAKER_00cross didn't just cover your sin, it killed and canceled your record. And while Satan wants to cancel you, Satan doesn't have a chance because Jesus canceled sin and Satan when
Jesus Cancelled Sin and Satan
SPEAKER_00he got up from that grave. So stop living like the past still owns you. Your debt was paid, your chains were broken, your sentence was canceled. Because listen, rebels, redeemed rebels don't live in prison to old records. They walk
Walk in Freedom
SPEAKER_00in the freedom Jesus purchased. Amen.
