#90 | All Things Work Together | Romans 8:28 | The Great 8

Romans 8:28 is one of the most quoted verses in the entire Bible—and one of the most misunderstood.

You'll find it on coffee mugs, T-shirts, Instagram captions, hospital room walls, and funeral programs. But many people misread what Paul is actually saying. He doesn't say all things are good. Cancer isn't good. Divorce isn't good. Abuse isn't good. Loss isn't good. Death isn't good. Paul isn't calling every circumstance good. He's declaring that God is so sovereign, so wise, and so powerful that He can take even the darkest chapters of our lives and weave them together for His good purposes. 

The Greek word Paul uses for "work together" is synergeo, where we get the word synergy. It's the picture of many different ingredients coming together to produce one beautiful outcome. Alone, the ingredients may seem meaningless—or even unpleasant. But in the hands of the Master, nothing is wasted. God is working behind the scenes while we only see one page of the story.

In this episode, we unpack three powerful truths from Romans 8:28:

1. God Is Working Through It — Even when you can't see His hand, God hasn't stopped working. He's active in every victory, every setback, every heartbreak, and every unanswered prayer.

2. God's Good Is Greater Than Your Comfort — God's definition of "good" isn't an easier life. It's a life that looks more like Jesus. He's more committed to your character than your comfort.

3. God Never Wastes A Season — Every delay, every disappointment, every trial, and every waiting season matters. God is weaving together a story that's bigger than what you can currently see.

Ultimately, the greatest picture of Romans 8:28 is the cross itself. What looked like the greatest tragedy in history became the greatest victory. If God could bring salvation from a cross, He can bring purpose from your pain.

Final Application:

• What situation in your life feels confusing right now?

• What prayer remains unanswered?
• Can you trust that God is still working—even when you cannot see how?

Because all things are not good.

But God is.

And He is working all things together for good.

all things work together. That's the text. Here we go. We know. This is what Paul said. We know. He didn't say we think. He says, we know that all things work together for the good of those who love God and who are called according to his purpose. So Romans 8.28

The Most Misunderstood Verse In Romans

Paul Doesn't Say All Things Are Good

are good. Listen, cancer is not good, divorce isn't good, abuse isn't good, loss isn't good. Funerals are not good because of the tragedy or just because people are departing from this earth and you miss them. But listen, Paul isn't calling everything good. He's saying God is so powerful that he can work through all things for good. God doesn't waste what he doesn't cause. Like remember where we are in Romans 8, Paul just talked about suffering and groanings and even weakness and not knowing what to pray. And then he says, and we know. Notice he didn't say we guess, we hope, we wish. He goes, We know. And this is his confidence in the gospel, this certainty and assurance in the gospel. God may be mysterious sometimes, but he's never absent. And Paul says, all things work together. That phrase work together comes from the Greek word that I hope I know how to pronounce this is synergio. It's where we get our word synergy. It means multiple things working together towards one outcome. That's what synergy is. If you think about a cake, flour by itself does not taste good. Eggs by themselves aren't great unless you're a lunatic. When they're just you just crack them and put them in a cup. It's not pleasant. Baking powder, you're not going to just eat that with your finger. But together, something beautiful emerges, such as a baked cake. And listen, let's go deeper. Paul is saying God takes your victories, your failures, your heartbreaks, your suffering, your blessings and disappointments, answered prayers, unanswered prayers, and somehow works them together for his purpose. God sees the whole picture while we only see one piece. But God is working while you're waiting. Let me give y'all three points. Number

Point 1: God Is Working Through It

one is that God is working through it. Even when you can't see it, Paul says all things work together, not some things, not most things, all things. The things you understand, the things you don't understand, the things you celebrate, the things you cry about, the things that have happened to you and the dumb things you've done. God is working through all of it. Just because that you can't see God's hand in it does not mean he stopped working. Joseph couldn't really see God's hand in the pit when his brothers betrayed him. David couldn't always see it in the cave. He's like, God, why have you forsaken me? Oh, no, that's that's exactly what Jesus quoted on the cross. And Daniel, at first, he believed the Lord, but I mean, at some point you'd have to think, okay, is he looking around being discouraged because he's been captured? But God was working. God does some of the

God Does His Best Work Behind The Scenes

best work behind the scenes. Where have you assumed God is absent simply because he's invisible?

Point 2: God's Good Is Greater Than Your Comfort

Number two, God's good is greater than your comfort. Purpose, his purpose for you is the goal. Most people define good as easy, comfortable, convenient, successful, but that's not how Paul defines it. Because verse 29 explains verse 28. The good is not primarily comfort, the good is conformity to Christ. You see, God's primary goal isn't making your life easier. His primary goal is making you look more like Jesus. It's not just you get saved and you go to heaven when you die. No, you get saved and you become sanctified because you grow in Jesus. And that changes everything. Because sometimes pain produces maturity. Like trials are going to produce dependence. Suffering produces endurance and hardship produces holiness. And so God

God Is Shaping Your Character

is more committed to your character than your comfort. And the greatest blessing in your life may not be what makes you happy. It's going to be the thing that makes you holy. So what if the thing you're asking God to remove is the very thing He's using to shape you? Which leads me to

Point 3: God Never Wastes A Season

number three is that God never wastes a season. Every chapter matters. One of the enemy's favorite lies is this season means nothing. You're just stuck. You're behind. God forgot you. Nothing is happening. Some even well thought out Christians will say, hey, when you're going through something, hey, everything happens for a reason, honey, and quote, cute little platitudes and give you fortune cookie hope. But listen, that's not true. Romans 8 is not saying everything happens

Gospel Greater Than Hallmark

for a reason. That's hallmark. That's not the gospel. Romans 8 says, well, all things are working together for good. In other words, every season matters, every trial matters, every delay matters, every disappointment matters. Not because they're enjoyable, but because God is using them to produce something in you. Listen, think about Joseph. The pit mattered, the prison mattered, the betrayal mattered, the waiting mattered. Why? Because even though his brothers abandoned him and sold him into slavery, eventually Joseph would rise to prominence and save his land. None of it was wasted. Again, one day Joseph looked backward and sees God was weaving together a story he couldn't understand and saying that, hey, what my brothers, what they meant for evil, God meant for good. And I get it, man. It is so hard to believe all things work together until you're on the other side of all. We talked about that in the first week of our James study. But listen, you may not understand the chapter, but that doesn't mean you can't trust the author. Don't judge God by a chapter he didn't finish writing. We've said that all week. What

Not Pointless, but Powerful
