Have you ever walked through a season where life was so hard... you honestly wondered,

"God... where are You?"

Maybe you've never said it out loud. But you've thought it. The diagnosis came. The relationship ended. The anxiety wouldn't stop. The prayers felt unanswered. The grief kept coming. And somewhere in the middle of it... you started wondering...

"Has God pulled away from me?"

Paul knows every believer eventually wrestles with that question. That's why, in Romans 8:35, he doesn't begin with an answer. He begins with a question: "Who can separate us from the love of Christ?"

Paul isn't asking whether hardship will come. He already knows it will. He's asking something far deeper: Can suffering actually separate you from Jesus? The answer is an emphatic no. Pain may interrupt your plans, but it can never interrupt God's love. Your circumstances may change, but Christ's love never does.

In this episode, we unpack three powerful truths from Romans 8:35:

1. Christ's Love Is The Foundation — Your security isn't built on the strength of your love for Jesus. It's built on the perfection of His love for you.

2. Suffering Doesn't Mean Separation — Affliction, distress, persecution, famine, danger, and loss are real. But the presence of suffering is not the absence of God's love.

3. The Question Builds Confidence — Paul asks the question not because he doubts God's love, but so you'll stop doubting it. Search every hardship imaginable, and you'll discover that none of them are powerful enough to separate you from Christ.

Ultimately, we know nothing can separate us because there was one moment when Jesus experienced separation for us. At the cross, He bore our sin and endured the judgment we deserved so that everyone who trusts Him would never be separated from the Father's love again.

Final Application:

• When life gets hard, where does your mind run first?
• Do you question God's love... or remember the cross?
• Are you allowing temporary pain to rewrite eternal truth?
• What hardship have you mistaken for God's absence?

Because your grip on God may weaken...

But His grip on you never will.

When Life Makes You Question God's Love

was just hard? You honestly wondered, God, where are you? And maybe you've never said it out loud, but you've thought it. And the diagnosis came, the relationship ended, the anxiety just would not stop. Maybe the prayers felt unanswered and your grief just kept coming. And somewhere in the middle of it, you start wondering, has God pulled away from me? And Paul knows every believer eventually wrestles with that question. So instead of making a statement, he asks one. He says, Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Imagine a little boy holding his father's hand while walking through a crowded airport. The crowd is moving, people are everywhere. And the child gets distracted, and then he trips, and then he lets go for a moment. But here's the difference the father never lets go of him. The child's grip may weaken, but the father's grip never does. And that's the picture Paul is painting. I can relate to this analogy because when I walk my twins across the road, or if they're holding my hand when we're in somewhere where that's crazy, um, where there's traffic, or maybe they're inside somewhere they've never been because they're only three and a half and they're still trying to figure life out, is they get so distracted that they start falling down and they're they may scrape their knees because they fall down. And even though their grip kind of weakens, mine doesn't. And I got two of them. So your grip on God may weaken, but his grip on you never will. And let's be honest, when life hurts, we naturally start asking the wrong questions. Did I do something wrong? Is God punishing me? Do did I lose his favor? Has he forgotten pain as a way of making us question the piece that once convinced us of Jesus? And our circumstances became loud. Our emotions become louder. And if we're not careful, we let our feelings interpret God's love instead of letting God's love interpret our feelings. I'm gonna say that again. Sometimes we let our feelings interpret God's love instead of letting God's love interpret our feelings.

Never Let Your Circumstances Speak Louder Than the Cross

Listen, never let your circumstances become louder than the cross. I like to preach that. Never let your circumstances become louder than the cross. And Paul asks, Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Notice what he doesn't ask.

What Does "Separate" Mean?

He doesn't ask, will suffering come? He already knows it. He's living it. He asks something deeper. Can suffering separate you? The Greek word there for separate is this word chorizo. It means to divide, to sever, to pull apart, to remove from relationship. And Paul isn't asking if life can hurt you. He's asking if life can remove you from Christ. Those are two very different questions. Hardship is real, but separation is impossible. See, pain may interpret your plans, but listen, uh, pain may interrupt. I'm sorry, pain may interrupt your plans, but it can never interrupt God's love. Nothing life throws at you has the authority to remove you from the love of Christ. Let me get all three

Point 1: Christ's Love Is The Foundation

points. Number one, Christ's love is the foundation. Notice Paul doesn't ask, can you stay faithful enough? He asks, can anything separate you from Christ's love? The foundation isn't your love for Jesus, it's his love for you. Because your love has good days. It really does. But it also has bad days, strong days and weak days. But his love never has any of them. It's always um 100. It's always great, it's always awesome. Your security is not built on the strength of your love for Christ, it's built on the perfection of Christ's love for you. So when life gets hard, where do your thoughts naturally run? Toward fear or toward the faithfulness of Jesus. But Paul doesn't stop with love. He immediately starts listing hardships. See, suffering, listen, here's here's the second one thing I want you to understand

Point 2: Suffering Doesn't Mean Separation

is that suffering doesn't mean separation. Hear that. I I want to be careful here, but I want you to hear this. Suffering does not mean separation. Paul doesn't pretend suffering isn't painful. He names it affliction, distress, persecutions, famine, danger, sword. He's realistic because Christianity isn't pretending life is easy, it's trusting Jesus when life isn't. Sometimes we assume if God loved me, he wouldn't let this happen. And Paul says exactly the opposite: God loves you, and suffering still happens. And the presence

The Presence Of Suffering Isn't The Absence Of God's Love

of suffering is not the absence of God's love. Some of God's most loved people walked through some of life's hardest valleys. Joseph in the pit before he ever got to the palace. He was in a prison. David had to face Goliath and also was hunted by King Saul and eventually because of his sin was hunted by some other sons. He loses a baby. He went through some stuff, man. He went through caves. Think about Daniel again in the lion's den for our men who've been listening on Saturday mornings. We've been talking about the virtues of Daniel. He went through a lot because of his prayer life. He was thrown into the lion's den. I could go on and on, but listen, don't interpret God's love through your circumstances. Interpret your circumstances through God's love. And that's exactly why Paul asked the question. Number

Point 3: The Question Builds Confidence

three, the question builds confidence. Who can separate us? Paul could have simply written, nothing can separate us. Instead, he asked the question first. Why? Because he wants believers to think, to wrestle, to search their hearts, to consider every possible hardship, and then realize that none of them are strong enough. Paul isn't creating doubt, he's destroying it. He's inviting us to search every corner of life and discover that nowhere is there anything powerful enough to remove us from Christ. And the question isn't asked because Paul doubts God's love. It's asked, so you'll stop doubting it. So how do we know nothing can separate us? Because there was one moment when Jesus

Jesus Was Forsaken For Us

experienced separation. On the cross, he bore our sin. He experienced the judgment we deserved so that everyone who trusts him would not be separated from the Father's love again. And Jesus experienced what we deserve so we could all so we could receive only what he deserved. Jesus was forsaken, so you would never will be. So you never would be. So listen, life will shake you, people will disappoint you, pain will visit you, suffering will come. But listen, rebels, redeemed rebels, nothing in life has authority to separate God's children from God's love. So stay close, keep trusting. And remember,
