#104 | More Than Conquerors | Romans 8:37 | The Great 8

Everybody loves a comeback story. The team that was down by twenty and somehow wins.

The athlete who comes back from injury. The underdog who shocks the world.

We celebrate victory. But Paul says something even greater. He doesn't say we're barely hanging on. He doesn't even say we're conquerors.

He says "We are more than conquerors."

That almost sounds impossible when you remember everything Paul has just listed—affliction, persecution, hardship, danger, and suffering. Yet Romans 8 doesn't promise victory after the battle. It declares victory in the middle of it. 

The Greek word Paul uses is hypernikaō—a word that means to overwhelmingly conquer, to gain a surpassing victory. Because of Jesus, believers aren't simply survivors. We don't barely limp across the finish line. We share in the overwhelming victory Christ has already secured.

In this episode, we unpack three powerful truths about living as more than conquerors:

1. Christ Won the Battle — Before you ever stepped onto the battlefield, Jesus had already defeated your greatest enemies: sin, death, hell, and Satan. The victory was secured at the cross and announced by the empty tomb.

2. His Victory Becomes Ours — Through our union with Christ, His triumph becomes our triumph. We don't overcome through willpower or self-confidence—we overcome through Him.

3. Love Fuels the Victory — The source of our confidence isn't our performance. It's the unchanging love of Christ. We don't fight to earn God's love; we fight because we've already received it.

Ultimately, Jesus didn't conquer for Himself alone. He conquered for us. His victory over sin, death, and Satan has become the inheritance of everyone who belongs to Him. That's why Christians don't fight hoping they'll win someday. We fight knowing Christ already has.

Final Application:

• What battle have you been approaching like someone who's already defeated?
• Where do you need to stop relying on your own strength and start resting in Christ's victory?
• How would your attitude change if you truly believed you were fighting from victory instead of for it?
• Stand today with confidence—the victory already belongs to Jesus.

Because...

We don't fight for victory.

We fight from victory.

A Good Comeback Story

a comeback story. You know, the team that's down by 20 and wins. You know, my my my San Antonio Spurs, um, you know, they were um up by almost 30 points um in I think game three or something like that, or game four or five of the finals, and the Knicks came back, and it was a comeback story because the Knicks were scrappy, and I'm still defeated by that. But anyway, the team that's down by 30, it comes back and wins. And the underdog that shocks the world, the athlete who comes back from injury, we celebrate victory. But Paul describes something even greater. He doesn't say we barely survived, y'all, we made it. He doesn't even say we conquered. He says

Paul Says "More Than"

we are more than conquerors. You need to underlie that in your Bible. We are more than, and it's intentional. Here's why. Because the question we have to ask is what does it even mean? Because if you've been reading Romans 8, it doesn't feel like victory. It feels like suffering and pressure and persecution. I mean, Paul's talking about wolves going after sheep. Yet he says, No, not after those things, in those things, or more than conquerors. Victory is not waiting on the other side of your struggle. It's already yours in the middle of it. Notice Paul begins, no, he's responding to everything he just listed: the affliction, the distress, the persecution, the famine, all those words, dangerous sword. He says, No, those things don't define the outcome. Uh, then comes one of the greatest promises in the New Testament. He goes, No, in all these things. Remember, not around them, not without them, not above them, not after them, in them. Your battle is the location of God's victory. Paul says, we are more than conquerors. The Greek

What Does Hypernikaō Mean?

word there is incredible. It's this word that's hyper Nikeo. It's actually two words combined: hyper, above, beyond, exceeding, overwhelming. And then he says nikeo, which is to conquer, to overcome, to prevail. Paul literally creates a word. It means to overwhelmingly conquer, to gain a surpassing victory, to completely overcome. Y'all, this is overcoming with margin. So this isn't someone barely crawling across the finish line. This is a decisive victory, not because of who we are, but because of whose we are. And remember what Jesus told Peter that the gates of hell cannot prevail against heaven, us, that we're gonna be the ones to advance. So Jesus didn't save you just to survive, he saved you to overwhelmingly overcome with margin. Because Christ conquered, his people conquered. Some of y'all

Point 1: Christ Won the Battle

three points. Number one, Christ won the battle. Amen. I'm out. Might drop. Christ won the battle. Victory began, uh, victory begins at the cross. Before you ever fought, Jesus already won. The greatest enemies you had sin, death, hell, Satan, were defeated at Calvary. And now the empty tomb wasn't the beginning of victory. It was the announcement that victory had been secured already. And sometimes we live as though Jesus is still fighting. Listen, the battle for your salvation is over. The victory has already been won. And now we're simply learning to walk in it with Jesus. You don't fight hoping Jesus wins. You fight because he already did. Let's go. Come on, somebody say amen. Somebody email it. Somebody type it in the chat box, whatever. So stop living like victory depends on you. It doesn't. His victory didn't. Listen, the beautiful thing about this is his victory didn't stay with him. It is now yours. So Christ won

Point 2: His Victory Becomes Ours

the battle. Number two, his victory becomes ours. Union changes everything. Notice Paul says through him, not through ourselves, not through positive vibes and thinking, not through willpower. Through him, everything we have comes

through our union with Jesus. His righteousness became ours, his victory became ours, his life became ours. That's why Paul can say we are more than conquerors, because Jesus shares his victory with his people. Imagine a little boy riding on his father's shoulders. I do this with my boys all the time. And he's going across the finish line. But here's the deal, who crossed first? The father. Who gets to celebrate? Both of them. Why? Because they're together. It may have been the father bringing them, but the boy was with them. That's the gospel. Jesus

crossed the finish line first. And because we're in him, his victory becomes ours. Your confidence isn't in your strength, it is in your Savior. So where have you been trying to fight on your own strength instead of Christ's? And Paul tells us exactly why this victory belongs to us.

Point 3: Love Fuels the Victory

Number three, love fuels the victory. Paul, listen, notice how he ends the verse. He goes, through him who loved us, not through him who is who was disappointed in us. Not through him who tolerated us, loved us, past tense, completed, settled, certain. Everything flows from that love. The cross was love, the resurrection was love, the empty tomb was love. Your salvation was love. Your victory is love. Listen, I need you to understand you don't fight to earn God's love. You fight because you already have it. So listen, y'all. We don't fight for victory. We fight from it. The enemy may attack, the battle may rage, the pressure may increase, the suffering may continue. But listen, redeemed rebels, we're not victims. We're not barely making it.

Jesus Conquered For Us

We're not just conquerors. We are more than conquerors through him who loved us. So stop fighting like someone hoping to win and start fighting like someone Jesus already won for. Amen. Thank you
